TAS7000

3D Imaging Analysis System

The TAS7000 (*1) 3D (*2) imaging analysis system exploits the unique properties of terahertz waves (*3).The TAS7000 enables 3D non-destructive analysis of the internal structure and chemical composition of the target object; the results are shown on a 3D display. In addition, this system enables measurement of spectral characteristics and 2D mapping.
Advantest has developed an unprecedented solution for 3D analysis of industrial materials such as plastics and ceramics, as well as pharmaceutical products.
(*1) TAS7000: This system was developed by Advantest in collaboration with Prof. Dr. Kodo Kawase of Nagoya University.
(*2) 2D: Two-dimensional 3D: Three-dimensional
(*3) Terahertz waves: Region of electromagnetic spectrum between hundred gigahertz to tens of terahertz.

Application Terahertz Spectroscopy for Pharmaceutical Analysis

Terahertz Spectroscopy for Pharmaceutical Analysis
Pharmaceutical analysis and inspection with terahertz waves

Terahertz waves have long been considered to have enormous potential for pharmaceutical analysis. The TAS7000 fulfills these expectations by offering high-speed measurement and powerful imaging functionality that enables constituent distribution mapping and spectroscopic measurement of tablets. Characterization of powders is also supported.

Terahertz spectroscopy reveals intermolecular interactions

The unique properties of terahertz waves allow non-destructive, detailed analysis of pharmaceutical solids via spectrographic analysis of their absorption spectra, revealing the strength and type of intermolecular interaction.

Analysis of crystalline polymorphic forms

During the pharmaceutical study or manufacturing process, polymorphism occurs, a phenomenon leading to different arrangements of the same compound. Since molecular arrangement can have profound implications for solubility, stability, bioavailability and other factors. Terahertz wave is ideally suited for this analysis, due to its capability to collect a wealth of data on intermolecular interactions.

Analysis of crystalline polymorphic forms with the TAS7000

The graphs below show the results for analysis of three polymorphic forms of tolbutamide (left) and two hydrates of pipemidic acid (right). The changes in molecular arrangement during the crystallization process cause the same compounds to interact differently, producing dramatically different absorption spectra.

Advantages of the TAS7000 for Pharmaceutical Analysis

Improved R&D efficiency
The TAS7000 enables detection of polymorphic forms without preprocessing of samples, making it especially suitable for analyzing chemical compounds, the polymorphic forms of which was hard to be identified with previous analysis methods.
Product quality optimization
The TAS7000's non-destructive measurement functionality makes it well suited for production inspection; it can be used for chemical characterization and for detection of polymorphism and chemical impurities.
