Advantest Holds 8th Science Craft Day for Local Children

"Fly Sky-High! Send Your Rocket Hurtling Through the Air!"

TOKYO, Japan, July 11th, 2008 - Advantest Corporation (TSE: 6857, NYSE: ATE), has held its 8th Science Craft Day at its main research and development facility, Gunma R&D Center (Meiwa-machi, Ora-gun, Gunma). The event on July 5th attracted a record-high 185 participants, comprising local elementary school children and their parents. Advantest organizes these days as part of its commitment to contributing to the local community, aiming at giving children the opportunity to experience the fun of craftsmanship and providing an arena for interaction between families.
The theme of the day was "Fly Sky-High! Send Your Rocket Hurtling Through the Air!" and activities included constructing rockets from PET bottles and launching them by means of water and air pressure. Advantest employees acted as instructors, explaining the theory behind why the rockets actually fly and giving advice on how to make them soar through the air. Based on these explanations, the children and their parents then set about creating their own rockets and soon becoming engrossed in their task. Once all the rockets were complete, a contest was held to see who could propel their rocket the furthest. Under the heat of the summer sun, the children sweated to make adjustments to water pressure and angles of launch, enthusiastically seeking out ideas to make their rockets fly further.
Advantest has been holding these Science Craft Days since 2005 as part of its social contribution endeavors. Recognizing that children hold the key to the future, Advantest plans to continue with these events, to incite an interest in scientific craft and natural science in young people and to promote the importance of interaction between family and friends.
