TOKYO, Japan, April 1st, 2008 - Toshio Maruyama, president and CEO of Advantest Corporation (TSE: 6857, NYSE: ATE), welcomed new employees to the company with a message that drew explicit links between the company's motto - "Technology Support on the Leading Edge" - its guiding principle of a quest for the essence, and the challenges that face young members of society in a climate fraught with intensifying economic difficulties. . As a first step along this path to their future, he urged them to take the time to go to their parents and also to the teachers who trained them, to express appreciation to them for their part in their achievements.
Advantest's mission is to provide cutting-edge products to cutting-edge industry. Underlining the company's role as a manufacturer, President Maruyama commented in his address on the importance of being conscious of manufacturing from the perspective of the customer, prioritizing customer satisfaction at all times. He also stressed that manufacturing is not merely the business of the manufacturing department, but requires the cooperation of development, sales, maintenance and administrative personnel.
The CEO went on to remark that as the new recruits started their jobs, they could expect to come in contact with a wide variety of people with perspectives and lifestyles very different from their own. "However," he warned, "even if you are faced with circumstances that seem unbearable, struggle on! Do not run away and become a loner. Accept others, and try to build relationships that will help you to overcome these obstacles," he urged, evoking Advantest's emphasis on mutual accountability and teamwork. He advised the recruits to challenge themselves by exercising their talents to the full in any given situation and building relationships with as many people as possible, allowing society to evaluate them.
Finally, Maruyama spoke on Advantest's guiding principle, Quest for the essence. He reminded that the semiconductor industry is known for its vulnerability to the silicon cycle, and the chip-test equipment industry is even more vulnerable. However, he affirmed, "I am convinced that as Advantest weathers these periodic ups and downs, we emerge stronger as a company, having mastered the skills we need to ride out the troughs." In the same way, he continued, individuals learn from facing problems. When confronted by a challenge, all of us tend to see it first from our own perspective, or be too anxious to agree with those around us, which often leads us to make a rash or superficial judgment. In work and in life, it is important to develop a mindset that allows us to look deeper into the roots of problems, and discover their underlying causes, the president said. In fact, we should seek the essence of problems, so that our quest leads to creative and productive solutions.
