TOKYO, Japan, November 5th, 2007 - Advantest Corporation (TSE: 6857, NYSE: ATE) today announced its new multi-channel optical fiber strain sensing system, the N8511. Enabling the early detection of ground movement and structural strains caused by natural disasters, over an area up to 16 times greater than that of its predecessor, the new system will be available from mid-January 2008.
Over recent years, optical fiber strain sensing systems have been used in disaster prevention to monitor signs of impending landslides or structural collapse following natural disasters. Advantest's new N8511 presents the industry's first such system with multi-channel selector functionality, allowing for strain sensing of up to 16 optical fibers. Thanks to this, its coverage area is up to 16 times larger than that of its predecessor, the N8510*. Furthermore, the N8511, with its capability to monitor up to 16 optical fibers, dramatically cuts system costs, as it does not require the optical switches and special software needed by conventional systems to measure multiple fibers. It also uses rack mounting for its optical fiber terminations, and is the industry's first to have its sensor connectors placed at the rear of the terminal.
The N8511 will debut at the Maintenance Techno Show 2007, to be held at Tokyo Big Sight (Tokyo International Exhibition Center) from November 6th to 9th.
Advantest will continue its efforts to contribute to the safety and well-being of society, by remaining committed to providing products that incorporate the company's extensive knowledge of test and measurement technology.
* The N8510 was a joint development between Advantest Corporation and NTT InfraNet.
