Advantest President Emphasizes to New Recruits the Importance of a Well-Rounded Character in a Manufacturing Company's Strength
April 2, 2007
TOKYO, Japan, April 2nd, 2007 - Toshio Maruyama, president and CEO of Advantest Corporation (TSE: 6857, NYSE: ATE), welcomed new employees to the company with a message that focused on the importance of character development and how the recruits can contribute to the company's manufacturing operations.

In his address, Maruyama commented on how greatly the semiconductor test equipment market is affected by the semiconductor business market, which is characterized by the tremendous speed at which technological progress occurs and product prices fall. Advantest, as a manufacturing company operating in this tough environment, meets customers' needs by scrutinizing technological roadmaps and predicting future demand trends, as well as by continuously bringing together its own strengths in development, production, sales and support services in the leading edge technology sector.

The CEO went on to say that one of Advantest's fortes is that it does not merely provide customers with high performance machinery. With its knowledge of leading edge technology and acute awareness of quality, it is also able to visit customers' test processes to provide testing technology solutions and know-how. He stressed two main points to the new recruits. First he urged them to always work from the "customer's perspective," an essential factor in producing the item required, at the specified time and in the necessary quantity. He then spoke about the importance of "cooperation between all departments," as the success of a manufacturing company depends not only on its production, but also on its development, sales, maintenance and administrative departments. Maruyama believes a lot can be expected of the young new members of staff, who will each undergo a year of training to reinforce the necessity of all departments working to maximum efficiency towards the same goal and collaborating with each other from the customer's perspective.

Maruyama spoke further on character development and stressed that new recruits should value the increased interaction they will have with a wide variety of people. Their ability to grow into well-rounded individuals, he stated, is critical to their success and such a character develops through a multitude of experiences, including personal and professional accomplishments and failures. Advantest's scope of activities is becoming more and more global and Maruyama advised that the new employees adapt to the requirements of this international and multi-cultural environment in order to be successful in business. He encouraged them to not only acquire languages, but to also cultivate themselves as worldly-wise people, capable of adapting to the diversifying society. In their new technical or administrative duties, he urged the recruits to go further than becoming experts in their own field, to develop themselves into more well-informed and capable individuals by keeping up to date with political and economic systems, current world affairs, culture and the arts. This approach to personal development will help to ensure that Advantest itself develops into an organization which excels not only in the products it provides, but also in the caliber of its personnel and its corporate culture.
