'Handmade Speakers - Made Easy!'
 |
TOKYO, Japan, February 7, 2007 - Advantest Corporation (TSE: 6857, NYSE: ATE), held a science craft day on 29th January as part of its social contributions program. It dispatched staff to Meiwa-nishi Elementary School, near Advantest's Gunma R&D Center (Meiwa-machi, Ora-gun, Gunma), to act as instructors for the day.
The theme of the day was 'Handmade Speakers - Made Easy!' and was chosen in order to meet requests from Meiwa-nishi Elementary School, where the event took place. 71 pupils from the 6th grade took part in constructing simple speakers. Coils, made from wound enameled wire, and magnets were fixed to diaphragms, which were then attached to cones made from card. When the speakers produced sound, shouts of joy such as, 'I've done it! Mine works!' could be heard from the children. After making the speakers, Advantest staff used diagrams to explain in simple terms how speakers produce noise. This followed up on schoolwork that the children are currently doing regarding the relationship between electricity and magnetism.
Advantest has been holding these science craft days for local schoolchildren at its own facilities since 2005, but this was the first time for its staff to visit a school for the event. Advantest will endeavor to provide further opportunities like this for raising the profile of science, to incite in children ambition and a passion for the subject.
