Magnetic Thrills for Local Kids
At Advantest's 4th Science Craft Day

November 11, 2006
TOKYO, Japan, November 11, 2006 - Advantest Corporation (TSE: 6857, NYSE: ATE), held its 4th Science Craft Day on the 11th of November at its Gunma R&D Center in Gunma prefecture, Japan. 60 children and their parents - mostly from the town of Meiwa-machi, near the R&D facility - participated in the event, themed "The Amazing Power of Magnets: Make Your Own Pet Bottle Motor." With the cooperation of Meiwa-machi school staff, Advantest employees acting as volunteer instructors organized an experience as thrilling as it was educational.

After an introductory lecture on the mechanism of the motor, parents and children worked together to make a pet bottle motor using a magnet and a battery. Kids experienced a sense of accomplishment as well as the hands-on fun of making something, while they learned important engineering principles. Yet the event was equally rewarding for the parents who spent quality time with their children, and for the Advantest volunteers who experienced the pleasure of sharing their expertise with their youngest neighbors.

In an era when the media is buzzing with reports that young Japanese are losing interest in the sciences, Advantest is actively providing opportunities for children to experience the excitement of scientific discovery. November 11th's event was the fourth in a series of Science Craft Days, with previous themes including: "Build a Crystal Radio," "Explore the Mysterious World of Magnetism," and "How to Make and Launch a Pet Bottle Rocket." Additionally, the 17,000m2 biotope at the company's Gunma R&D Center, which has been faithfully stocked with plants and wildlife indigenous to the Kanto Plain, is regularly opened to the public for educational purposes. It provides Gunma University's Environmental Science Institute with information for research, and Advantest volunteers frequently organize "Nature Encounter Sessions" for local schoolchildren. In the words of one volunteer: "It's our society, and these kids are our future." As a company passionate about technology, Advantest appears to see its educational outreach activities less as a duty than as a privilege.
