Advantest Revamps its Environmental
Report with Information on Social
Activities newly added

TOKYO, Japan,
August 25, 2004 – Advantest
Corporation (TSE:6857, NYSE:ATE)
has announced the publication
of the Advantest Environmental
and Social Activities Report 2004
which encompasses the company’s
policies and actions in corporate
social responsibility (CSR*) from
the viewpoint of environmental
conservation, society, and economy.
Since 2000, Advantest has annually
published the Environmental Report
to disclose information actively
on its environmental preservation
initiatives. The report was renamed
to the Environmental and Social
Activities Report this year, for
reflecting newly added information
on social activities such as for
personnel systems, safety activity,
health and social action, in addition
to the previous activities on
environmental conservation. The
alteration is made aiming at information
disclosure with greater transparency.
Besides pursuing profitability,
Advantest will be actively engaged
in fulfilling its environmental
conservation activity and social
issues so that the company will
emerge as a truly excellent company
that instills shareholders’
trust.
The English version of the report
is to be published at the beginning
of September 2004.

1) Corporate
Social Responsibility (CSR) Activity
The report newly included a chapter
that describes Advantestfs
CSR policies and actions to improve
following areas: customer satisfaction,
employee training, human rights
protection, safety in working
environment, social action activities,
and participation in local volunteers.
2) Environmental Management
Philosophy
The report describes Advantestfs
environmental management philosophy
in terms of both in environmental
conservation and economic activities.
The report at the same time expresses
the companyfs vision for
environmental management based
on its mid-term environmental
action plan by the end of FY 2006.
3) Introduction of New
Indices for Environmental Accounting
Advantest has introduced two new
environmental management indices,
an environmental improvement index
and environmental profit index,
since FY 2003. A customer effect
was also calculated to incorporate
the economic and physical effects
when Advantestfs environmentally
friendly products are used. The
indices are used to improve environmental
management performance.
4) Third-party Review
for Enhancing Reliability
A third-party evaluation was conducted
on the validity of environmental
preservation activities of Advantest
Group, and on the transparency
and reliability of its information
disclosure. The findings of this
objective evaluation are carefully
examined to be reflected in the
companyfs future activities.
5) Environmental Data
Available on Website
As was in the previous year, gBackground
of Environmental Preservation
Activitiesh and gEnvironmental
Data at individual Advantest sitesh
is available on the companyfs
website for paper use reduction.
In addition, the website address
is indicated in the report for
easier access to more detailed
information.
6) Environmental and Social
Activities Topics in FY 2003
(1) Established promotion system
for environment conservation
Environmental Promotion Center
and Central Environmental Policy
Committee were set up in order
to establish a system to ensure
that the company be engaged in
environmental conservation activities
from the aspects of business operations,
products, and solutions.
(2) Set up CSR Committee to supervise
company-wide CSR activities
CSR Committee was established
that integrated five committees
previously worked separately on
issues on information disclosure,
environment, and human right.
CSR Committee supervises and evaluates
these activities to ensure fulfillment
of Advantestfs corporate
social responsibilities.
(3) Obtained ISO14001 certification
at all research, development,
and production sites
As the Otone R&D Center (Kitasaitama-gun,
Saitama) obtained the expanded
certification in October 2003,
all of eight research, development,
and production sites of Advantest
in Japan are accredited to ISO14001
certification.
(4) Applies product environmental
assessment to all product categories
Product environmental assessment,
which provides quantitative evaluations
of the environmental effects during
development and designing processes
of new products, are now applied
to all product categories (electronic
measuring instruments, ATE products,
DI products, and FA products).
(5) Established Advantest Group
Environmental Action Plan (2004-2006)
Advantest Group Environmental
Action Plan provides mid-term
environmental targets until the
end of FY 2006. It has set specific
themes and targets in 16 items
in four fields of environmental
management, product manufacturing
environment, business activities,
and social activities, to be deployed
as company-wide activities.
