We have formulated the Fourth Advantest Group Environmental Action Plan which sets out the aims of its environmental endeavors from fiscal 2007 to 2009. Under the plan, the Advantest Group will focus on the three main environmental activities outlined below, with all group companies taking an active part in promoting environmental management.
| (1) |
Environmental Management |
Advantest will enhance its environmental management system, carrying out its environmental activities on a global scale |
| (2) |
Environmentally Friendly Products |
Advantest will help its customers to cut down their carbon dioxide emissions by offering power-saving products and services |
| (3) |
Advantest Group Business Activities |
The entire group will work on cutting down carbon dioxide emissions and reducing any other harmful effects its business activities may have on the environment
In addition to enhancing the environmental management system within the group, this environmental action plan incorporates the development of new power-saving products to support Advantest's customers in their environmental management, and the utilization of natural energy such as sunlight as a way of preventing global warming.
The Advantest Group was able to achieve 100% completion in 14 items out of the total of 18 items of goals set forth in the Advantest Group's Environmental Action Plan in 2008. Our specific achievements include successful acquisitions of ISO14001 in 5 additional locations overseas (i.e., the certification has been completed in the 7 major locations overseas) and reduction of the amount of generated waste by 55%, compared to 2005, by implementing a waste liquid treatment facility, etc.
However, the progress of the 3 other items remained in 70%, and one item was unattained. The underlying factors of these would be that the progress toward our goals based on our sales volume fell behind due to the impact of sluggish market conditions worldwide, and that the measures which included new capital investments were postponed for the time being. Specifically, because the implementation of natural energy will require a large investment, we decided to measure its return on investment carefully and set up our goals again according to the status of the market recovery in the future.

The achievements include the acquisition of integrated ISO14001 certification at all domestic plants as well as certification at Advantest Taiwan Inc., and came as a result of Advantest's efforts to enhance environmental management by putting this environmental management system in place. Other examples include carrying out environmental assessment on all products, and eliminating prohibited substances from 76% of the parts used by the company. The goals still being worked on, such as the specific rates for reduction of carbon dioxide emissions and waste materials, are reflected in the Fourth Environmental Action Plan, and efforts toward these goals will continue, to ensure definite achievement.
