Social contributions
As a corporate citizen, we place much importance on our role of contributing to society. We have established a social contributions program at Advantest to promote activities that are closely linked to society and the local region.

Overseas forestation activities
Advantest has been carrying out tree-planting in an area of Southeast Asia where deforestation has been occurring, with the aim of contributing to the local economy by supporting the regeneration of the tropical forest and related activities. We planted dipterocarp seedlings at an eco forest park near Kota Kinabalu, in Borneo, Malaysia. These activities were part of our CSR activities and were carried out over a three year period starting in 2004. The third and final phase of the tree-planting project was completed in November 2006. In total, we planted 7,500 dipterocarp seedlings, over an area of 30 hectares. 28 Advantest employees from Japan and overseas took part in the third planting. The work involved digging holes in the steep mountainside and planting seedlings one by one. It was physically hard, but as we all had the same objective of replenishing the indigenous dipterocarp rain forest, all participants worked together to plant 2,000 trees.

Scientific creation workshops
We hold scientific creation workshops for local elementary school children in Meiwa-machi, Gunma Prefecture, where our Gunma R&D Center is located. The idea is to spark the children's interest in making things, radio waves and electricity.

Contributing to society with used stamps
At Advantest, we collect together used stamps and used prepaid cards within the company, and exchange these for money through the NGO Japanese Organization for International Cooperation in Family Planning (JOICFP), and this money is used to buy household necessities and clothes which are sent to people in developing countries to help improve their lives.

Opening up the biotope to the public
The biotope, which has been created within the grounds of the Gunma R&D Center, is opened to the public on certain days, and this is used as an opportunity to enhance communication with the local community. Employees' families and local residents are invited, and we hold environment-related events such as quizzes about the animals and plants in the biotope, and American crawfish fishing contests, which also helps to eradicate this foreign pest. These events provide a chance to learn about the importance of the environment, at the same time as having fun. We also host groups of elementary school students and hold nature observation events.
