In the twentieth
century, the rapid growth of the
world's industrialized nations
helped provide the majority of
their citizens with a significantly
higher standard of living. Unfortunately,
these gains in material wealth
often placed a heavy toll on the
environment as both governments
and companies alike often ignored
environmental concerns for the
sake of economic progress. In
recent years, however, as the
connection between our economic
choices and problems such as global
warming and environmental pollution
becomes increasingly apparent,
there is a growing consensus that
everyone must start holding themselves
accountable for the consequences
of such myopic policies. Because
environmental conservation is
a truly border-less problem affecting
all of the Earth's inhabitants,
an effective solution demands
a strong commitment from every
level of society-from international
policy-making bodies to corporations
and to individual consumers.
At Advantest we are doing our
best to fulfill our responsibility
to help protect the environment
by utilizing a multi-faceted conservation
plan based on the Advantest Charter
on the Environment, a document
established in 1993 to serve as
a guideline for our conservation
activities. The four pillars of
this plan include the obtaining
of ISO 14001 certification for
our factories and R&D centers
within Japan, achieving zero emissions
of landfill waste, strictly regulating
the use of chemical substances,
and reducing the amount of energy
used to build each Advantest product.
In addition we have also adopted
the use of product life-cycle
assessments to help ensure that
our products can be easily broken
down and recycled after their
useful life span and make it a
point to choose environmentally-friendly
alternatives when making purchasing
decisions. Finally, on the grounds
of our R&D center in Gunma
Prefecture, Japan, we have established
a biotope-a natural habitat for
local flora and fauna that serves
as a symbol of the symbiotic relationship
with nature that we are striving
to establish.
Until recently, it was a widely
accepted notion that economic
expansion was only possible if
it came at the increased expense
of the environment. At Advantest,
however, we believe that it is
possible to achieve a more balanced
relationship between business
and environmental concerns and
are thus committed to incorporating
new conservation measures so that
we can continuously improve upon
our environmental performance.
