Greetings
My name is Haruo Matsuno, and I have the honor to be the newly elected president of Advantest. In recognition of all the support we have received from our customers and business partners, I would like to offer a few thoughts at this time.
Although we seem to have hit a bottom in the first quarter of fiscal 2009, our environment is still difficult, with more time needed before we can confidently predict a genuine recovery, given the loss of consumer confidence following the global financial crisis and the credit crunch. Having been chosen to lead the company through this difficult time, I have announced a new corporate initiative, 1000 Days, designed to unite our employees to ride out this storm without slipping into either panic or complacency. Advantest is rich in "buried treasure" of technological and human resources, and I plan to dig up some of those treasures in the days to come, while using each and every day to the fullest, and aligning our corporate structure for the medium-term with a future-oriented viewpoint.
The technological revolution that supports our daily lives, and the industrial economy, is an ever-evolving thing, with a constantly changing gallery of technologies in the driving seat, from the steam engine to the automobile, the computer, and now the electric auto and solar energy. Similarly, in the semiconductor industry, new types of chips and new applications for them are constantly appearing: PCs, cell phones, digital still cameras, MP3 players, and more recently digital TVs and automotive electronics. These new needs create new potential business for us. I strongly believe that downturns produce as much innovation as good times, and will endeavor to seize and create profit opportunities, without fear of failure.
Founded in 1954, Advantest has inherited the corporate mission of "Technology Support on the Leading Edge, Contributing to Society through Advanced Technology Development." Our corporate mantra is "Quest for the Essence," emphasizing that we've always believed in looking to fundamentals for the correct solutions to fundamental problems. Going forward, I will strive to earn the optimism of our shareholders, the trust of our stakeholders, and the faith of our customers, in line with our corporate mission and the principles set out in The Advantest Way.
